A Spell to Recall Memories

The fire scorched my face. I tried to move away from Surtr, tried to escape the torture, but I couldn’t move. I bolted upright and opened my eyes, ready to summon my weapon and defend myself. I wasn’t going to go down without a fight. My eyes wandered about the place. This wasn’t Surtr’s realm. Where was I? The room seemed familiar. My gaze settled on Cassie and my body relaxed.

She stared at me with bulging eyes, her hand over her mouth. ‘What happened?’

I let out a nervous laugh and scratched my forehead. My memories from the day before came back to my mind. We must have fallen asleep. ‘Sorry. I’m a bit jumpy in the mornings.’ It was an understatement. I wasn’t used to waking up next to someone else.

Leah gave her body a stretch. ‘Good morning.’ She looked from me to Cassie. ‘Did I miss something?’

I glanced over at Cassie, wondering if she would mention anything to Leah, but she stayed quiet.

Leah stood up. ‘Anyone for breakfast?’

I rubbed my neck, feeling embarrassed and uncomfortable. ‘I think I’m just going to head home.’

‘Suit yourself. I, for one, am starving,’ she said as she walked into the kitchen.

Cassie gave me a questioning look, but I wasn’t ready to answer any questions. I gave her a kiss on the forehead. ‘I’ll see you later.’ She nodded in response.

‘Bye, Leah,’ I shouted, hoping she would hear me from the kitchen. I made my way to the door and let myself out.

At a fair distance away, I turned into a crow and spent the next few hours drifting, feeling the air under my wings.

When I arrived home, I checked my phone and saw that Cassie had texted me. She was in the woods with Leah and I could come and meet them if I wanted to, but she was happy to come here afterwards if I wasn’t up for it.

Determined not to let my startled response from the morning stop me from seeing Cassie, I flew over to meet them. When I landed on Cassie’s shoulder, I overheard them mentioning the house. I jumped to the ground and transformed back into my human form.

Leah took a step back. ‘I knew it was you, but it’s still a shock.’

‘What were you saying about the house?’ I asked, giving Cassie a hug.

‘So we’re eavesdropping now too,’ Leah said with a wink.

Cassie shot her a look. ‘We were just trying to figure out who had placed the spell around the house.’

‘Did you figure anything out?’

Cassie shook her head. ‘Not really. It doesn’t make any sense.’

I agreed with her. I had been trying to figure out what was going on from the moment I’d learned about the enchantment. I shrugged. ‘I don’t know what to make of it either.’

After a moment of silence, Leah spoke up. ‘How about we get to the reason why Cassie asked you to meet us here?’

I cocked my head. I hadn’t realised there was a specific reason. ‘And what reason was that?’

‘There’s a spell in the book to recover lost memories.
